OTTAWA (ON) – The Canadian Men’s National Squash Team finished 2-1 after pool play concluded to take second place in Pool B at the World Men’s Team Championships in Mulhouse, France. This placing moves them onto the next round, the Round of 16, where they enter a single-elimination draw to determine who will be the World Men’s Team Champions in 2013.
OTTAWA (ON) – The Canadian Men’s National Squash Team finished 2-1 after pool play concluded to take second place in Pool B at the World Men’s Team Championships in Mulhouse, France. This placing moves them onto the next round, the Round of 16, where they enter a single-elimination draw to determine who will be the World Men’s Team Champions in 2013.
This afternoon in France, Canada faced a must-win match against Colombia, with the winner claiming second place in the Pool and moving onto the Round of 16. Andrew Schnell of Calgary, playing in the #3 position, started off the action with a 3-1 win over Colombia’s Andres Vargas, 11-4, 5-11, 11-9, 11-4. Montreal’s Shawn Delierre, Canada’s #1 player who is ranked 40th in the world, went down in straight games to World #19 Miguel Rodrigues, 6-11, 8-11, 6-11.
The encounter came down to the final pairing of team #2s Dane Sharp and Bernardo Samper. Sharp, a determined and feisty player from Toronto, fought off Sampler in a close opening game with a 13-11 win, and then solidified the match for Canada in straight games 11-3 and 11-6.
Team Canada enters into a tough match in the Round of 16 tomorrow, as they take on the top-seeded Egyptians. Egypt is the heavy favourite to win a third straight Championship, having won in 2009 and 2011. All four members of Team Egypt are ranked within the World Top-12.
