A few upsets found their way into the Men's draw yesterday, with the ousting of seeded Ontario players Carter Robitaille and Alexi Gosset in the quarterfinals. Tonight saw upsets on the Women's side, as both 3/4 seeds bested their opponents to set up their Gold medal matchup for tomorrow. BC's Michele Garceau came off of a 5 game win last night and carried that momentum into her match against top seed Sophie Mehta of Ontario. Mehta and Garceau split the first two games, with Garceu winning the third and fourth the seal the match.
Next door on the second show court, Mehta's teammate Maddie O'Connor was taking on second seed Chloe Chemtob of Quebec. Games went back and forth – as did the Ontario fans from court to court – before O'Connor capitalized on a 10-9 match ball to close out the close match. "The biggest win of my career!" O'Connor said afterwards. "I've played her [about] 3 times, but never got past 4 games." The ladies final will go at 7pm tomorrow alongside the Bronze medal match of Mehta versus Chemtob.
Following that excitement, the Men's semi finalists made quick work to determine their Gold medal final, to be played tomorrow at 8pm. Number one seed David Baillargeon of Quebec and 3/4 seed Michael Mehl of Alberta each prevailed 3-0 over unseeded players Gavin Maxwell and Matthew Toth, respectively, of BC.
Positions 5-8 will also be played through in the individual draws on Wednesday. Carter Robitaille (ON) will face off with Brett Schille (AB) for 5th place, while Quincy Beck (PEI) and Tara Shannon (AB) will play for 5th in the Women's. Hannah Blatt (MB) and Grace Thomas (BC), and Alexi Gosset (ON) and Sebastien Boucley (QC) will play for 7/8.
The team event will enter its third day on Wednesday, building up to the conclusion of Round Robin play Thursday which will feature most of the marquee matchups. Cross-over playoffs are scheduled for Friday with the medals and final placings will happen on Saturday
