The 2018 World University Squash Championships are around the corner, and we want to make sure that all eligible players are aware of this incredible opportunity!
From September 6-12, the most talented young squash players from universities around the world will converge and compete in Birmingham, UK to compete at the 2018 World University Squash Championships.
The World University Championships is run by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Since 1996, when squash was first added to the championships, FISU has gathered the best student athletes from around the world to compete at this international tournament every two years. Karim Darwish, Thierry Lincou and Raneem El Weleily have all achieved gold medals in this tournament and went on to become world number ones. Canada has earned medals in this championship before, including a gold medal won by Marnie Baizley in 2000 in the women’s singles event.
This event also showcases the diversity within our sport, as it attracts many players from different countries. In 2016, a record 19 countries participated in the championships. A prestigious international tournament for student-athletes, the World University Championships is a great opportunity for young players to compete and develop.
There will be a singles event which Squash Canada will send 3 men and 2 women to compete in. These athletes will also be part of our roster for the team event, in which 2 men and 1 woman will be chosen from the roster to play singles matches. While the event is self-funded, Squash Canada is looking for fundraising opportunities to alleviate some of the costs for participants. The approximate cost per participant for this event is expected to be around $2,750 (CAN) including airfare and accommodations.
In order to be eligible, you must be between the ages of 17-25 on Jan 1 of the year of the tournament. You must either be attending a university or have attained your degree in the year preceding the tournament. If you are interested in this opportunity, complete the intent to participate declaration form and submit a $200 deposit by May 7th. Selections will be made by May 18th. Athletes who are not selected will receive a reimbursement for the deposit.
