Toronto (ON) – Day three of the squash competition kicked off Monday with the commencement of the Men’s and Women’s Doubles competition. The Canadian Men’s team, featuring Calgary brothers Andrew and Graeme Schnell, started the day off well with a 2-0 (11-5, 11-4) victory over Guyana.
The Women’s Doubles group of Sam Cornett and Nikole Todd followed suit with a 2-0 (11-7, 11-5) win over Guatemala, moving to the Semifinals against the top-seeded team from Mexico.
Toronto (ON) – Day three of the squash competition kicked off Monday with the commencement of the Men’s and Women’s Doubles competition. The Canadian Men’s team, featuring Calgary brothers Andrew and Graeme Schnell, started the day off well with a 2-0 (11-5, 11-4) victory over Guyana.
The Women’s Doubles group of Sam Cornett and Nikole Todd followed suit with a 2-0 (11-7, 11-5) win over Guatemala, moving to the Semifinals against the top-seeded team from Mexico.
In the Men’s Doubles Quarterfinals, the Schnells faced off against the number two seed from Mexico. In one of the most thrilling matches of the day, Canada and Mexico traded points and each game came down the wire. In the first game, the Schnells won 11-8 in 18 minutes. In the second game, the Schnells had an opportunity to win being up 10-9, but the Mexican team won the next two points and the game 11-10. This set up a thrilling deciding game that saw the score reach 10-10 before the Schnells triumphed 11-10. This win punched Canada’s ticket to the Semifinals against the United States of America.
Cornett and Todd were in tough against the top-seeded Mexican team in the Women’s Doubles Semifinal. However the Canadian ladies dazzled in their first game, winning 11-2, setting themselves up for an intense second game. With the chemistry built from playing together for years, Todd and Cornett could not be stopped and won the second game 11-7 and earned a spot in the Finals against the American team of Amanda Sobhy and Natalie Grainger. The gold medal match takes place today at 7pm on the Main Court in the Direct Energy Centre.
In the Men’s Semifinals, the Schnell brothers faced off against Christopher Gordon and Christopher Hanson of the United States. The Canadians pulled off a nail-biter in the first game 11-10 and that momentum was enough for them to win the second game 11-6 and solidify a spot in the gold medal game! The Schnells will play Colombia today at 8:30pm at the Main Court in the Direct Energy Centre.
The Women’s and Men’s Team event begins today, with the Canadian Women’s team set to start their quest to the podium against Colombia at 11:15am. The men start their event tomorrow against Colombia and Ecuador.
